Writing fiction is a bit like baking a cake. You will need the right ingredients in the ideal amounts, or it’ll turn out awful. For fiction, you need the ideal blend of storyline, action, description and personality growth to bring your story to life to your reader.
Character growth can be one of the most important things about science fiction. You want to produce a realistic set of personalities to move your plot together and to do that you want to understand them. But how much do you really have to know about them before you begin composing?
Well, that depends on the kind of story you are writing. The length of your tale will dictate the quantity of character information you’ll have to make them come to life. For simplicity sake, I have broken my personality sheet to what I use for each kind of writing. Your character sheets may vary.
Fiction is an integral part of individual life. Man has an inherent demand for diversion to get away, even though for a few moments, from the humdrum of life. Story telling has been among the earliest methods for accomplishing that and over the ages it’s become the diverse forms of entertainment we’ve got in the present day world. Entertainment is basically of two types – active and passive. The active involves physical participation in one way or other, while the passive does not. Fiction is basically a passive entertainment though the mind plays an important part in it. Fiction constantly involves visualization whether it is covert or overt. The first form of overt visualization was that the enacting of dramas as the cultures developed. The growth of technology introduced in its contemporary forms – cinema and tv. The key form is inherent to story telling and reading. It is an inherent characteristic of the individual (or perhaps any) mind a thought is always accompanied by an image. So as soon as one hears or reads a story the mind visualizes the scene and the characters; this procedure continues throughout the story and frequently even after it’s ended.
Fiction by its very definition is unreal. After we read a novel we are aware that the story and the characters in it are only a product of imagination of the writer. When we see a film we are aware that the characters are only acting their parts basically pretending to be someone besides themselves. Still we’re emotionally affected by the turns and twists in the story. We laugh with them, weep together, and also feel indignant towards the bad guys. The adorable hero or heroine might be despicable in real life and the protagonist may be a perfect gentleman, but we identify them using the characters they are portraying. In essence for this brief period we ourselves get hauled to the imaginary world of the author. Oddly enough this happens also with the author at least to some of them. He or she travels through the very same emotions while composing and possibly later as well. “Knowledge is limited, imagination is not.” Albert Einstein explained that even though the wording of the second part could have been different. Einstein like any other human being was not infallible. A number of his views that he held right till the ending turned out to be wrong even within the field of physics. In this particular announcement also he appears to have it backwards. Knowledge may be restricted in the case of someone but in general it is unlimited even when we believe just logical knowledge leaving aside transcendental. Science in particular has shown this at every step in the course of its development. Imagination pertains to an individual thoughts and is constrained by several things based on the circumstances of the person. A mind can imagine only what happens in some way to things already stored in it. Someone that has never been outside a distant place in wilderness and has had no contact with the world outside cannot imagine what metropolitan cities would be like.
Getting back to fiction that the imagination of the writer also must be predicated on his direct or indirect encounters. In this sense fiction is based on reality and to that extent it represents another dimension of truth. Here of course we run into the philosophical problem of the exact meaning of reality. You will find two diametrically opposite viewpoints – materialistic and spiritualistic. According to the former only things which can be perceived through our perceptions are real, everything else is unreal. The latter maintains that there’s one ultimate reality from which all that we perceive comes out and everything that’s perceived is simply an illusion. We again look at a statement by Einstein: “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a persistent one.” He was obviously referring to the reality of the phenomenal world. The term illusion can have different connotations but in general it means perceiving something rather different from what it is. So the presence of the thing is a prerequisite for illusion, it isn’t a mental construction. Imagination is purely a mental phenomenon and has nothing to do with anything actually existing. Thus the connection between fiction and reality is entirely different from that between reality and illusion. It does take some time to write a complete story for any kind of book.
In a philosophical sense the incredible world itself could be considered fiction. That is exactly what Shakespeare possibly meant when he wrote: “All the world’s a stage, and all men and women merely players”. We may as well consider everything in the world (space, time, matter) as players since everything has its entrance and exit. We of course run into the problem of saying what the stage is and who wrote the script. Shakespeare most likely believed in God, strict determinism, also in the truth of the world, so he didn’t have this issue. Now it is generally believed that the world also has a beginning and will have an ending. If the universe is also a participant, are there multiple universes or does this come exclusively on the stage and then introduces other players? However, what is the stage in this case? Quantum physics points to one possibility. At extremely tiny scales of space and time there is a quantum emptiness that’s not really empty but full of energy that is constantly changing itself into virtual particles as well as back. What remains after the end of the world could possibly be an infinite version of the quantum emptiness filled with energy into which all the thing has converted itself. This universal energy is the origin of and background for all.
It is not merely a philosophical point. We spend a considerable part of our life from the fictional universe. We muse about the things in long run and dwell over the prior imagining what might have been. The creativity about the future is based on our hopes and ambitions and also to some extent it’s a positive in the sense we’re in a position to mould our future if we sincerely try. But musing over the past is really a futile exercise because we all know for a fact that ‘what could have been’ is only fantasy that never happened. Nevertheless it serves the exact same function as fiction in the perspective of entertainment. We entertain ourselves by imagining how life could have been, knowing fully well that it has no fact whatsoever. In a metaphorical sense ago, at the distant past, is fiction. At a certain sense history itself is fiction as it always contains the subjective bias of the author. What we understand of Buddha and Jesus today is more fiction than facts.
